Workshop Description and Supply List

This workshop will focus on painting a hummingbird in flight. Hummingbirds are tiny birds with huge personalities. Learn to create the beautiful feathers and show motion in the hummingbirds wings while creating a soft focus background with a wet-on-wet technique.

During this workshop: Students will explore how strong values and vibrant color will make the bird’s feathers feel shiny. We will use layering, wet-on-wet, masking and other techniques to create a realistic likeness of the bird and flowers with a with a blurred background.

Preparation in advance of the workshop: Participants will need to have the drawing for the painting on their watercolor paper and masked prior to the first day of the workshop. Lorraine will be doing my painting 13” x 19” (sized for travel) with a border for stapling or taping my paper down. Images will be provided in advance to workshop participants.

As a bonus project: Time permitting, Lorraine will demonstrate a portion of a swan in water study (7” x 10”) and discuss the similarities and differences to painting glass. Students are welcome to paint along for the study or just watch. Image will be provided in advance to workshop participants.

Abstract painter Stan Kurth calls himself an intuitive painter. By that, he means that his painting is about embracing feeling and instinct. He begins his work without any preliminary thoughts or plans for a specific object or subject. Starting with a blank substrate, he makes marks using a variety of tools, creating a library of design elements and applying design principles until a personal aesthetic is achieved. He does not use any external reference source for his paintings.

Stan was born and raised in Phoenix, and has been painting since he was four years old, He studied English literature and history at Northern Arizona University while completing many courses in painting and drawing. He worked as a graphic designer for 35 years, Stan Kurth currently devotes himself entirely to painting and teaching workshops around the country. Workshop Title: Intuitive Painting with Watercolor and Gouache

Workshop Description:

This workshop is designed to teach all levels of students to paint intuitively and start a painting without preconceived notions of the outcome. There will be no preliminary planning or drawing. The process will dictate the direction as students use watercolor and gouache to implement the elements and principles of design.

Paintings will begin with the application of random marks; then participants will add color using a mixture of watercolor and gouache to create a library of design elements. There will be regular comments and feedback of the work in progress concerning the relationships between the elements and principles. It is entirely possible that finished work may be representational, but the goal is to create work which is compositionally pleasing and aligned with the artist's personal aesthetic.
